Another Pickleball Queue App

15 Sep 26 (1mo ago)

There are already a lot of pickle queueing app. And I'm making one just for fun. It's rudimentary but so far I'm finding it interesting especially the problems I am encountering.

My personal pitch is just really Just another pickleball queue app but with some customizable avatars. The last part is for porfolio purposes *wink *wink.

What I Want So far:

Mainly just small court queing within friends 6-10 (non skill based). For now. And the main priority of the algorithm is to make sure everyone matches to others.

Then after that condition is met, Top 1 and Bottom 1 vs Top 2 vs Bottom 2 match up. Until the skill based is used.

But apart from that there is some absolute queing. Like, if a player sits out more than twice, then he will get a priority in the next match. Actually the amount allowable sit out depends on the number of players, but yea generally twice is limit for just within a small friends.

The above algorithm also requires either playing consequetively or sitting out consequentily. But it will eventually even out later.

Example problem would be 8 players. If it it continues without adjustment the same set of 4 players will keep on playing against each other.

Okay aside from the usual fair play ideology and also the customizable avatars, I also wanted to have some automatic kudos/acheivement cards.

Yea more than the top 3 players. For example, person has the most streaks. person who broke streak, match up that has 100% win rate, etc.

Match up that are close. Match up that are stomp etc. Yea and things like that.

Obviously, it would be nice to have a some image processing analysis for example, how much a player receives a return, scores a serve etc. But yea that is beyond the scope for now and definitely requires a camera.

Or even just using audio to determine the amount of balls rally.

I also have New Duo tag on match make.

Some wishful thinking feature

  • Duel/ Requesting Matchup/Pair
  • Vibrate/Push Notif when its your turn
  • To implement same player match up (opposite of new duo basically)
  • pseudo next /upcoming card (it was implemented before but it keep getting error)
  • time bounded game. if finished early, add. if finished late. deduct.
  • animated leaderboard

Debug:

  • test if addmitted late and check out early adding a person.

Other feature that not sure if I want to implement

  • Pairing/Linking.
  • pickleball AR filters. have some fire on your paddle.
  • pickleball spinning around your head as if you are stunned.
  • sitting out stats. waiting time stats.
  • "play with everyone" formats (often referred to as Progressive Whist or Whist Drives) (actually i already implemented this just didn't know that it was that name)
  • Augmented App on attaching your face
Some clubs run both formats in the same night:
First 90 minutes: Round Robin — everyone plays every other pair, structured intro.
Last hour: King of the Court — based on the round robin standings, run a ladder elimination on the top court.

Ah yes, I also did this pala. but the instead of King of Court, more like Top vs Bottom match up. For large skill gap, probably not hte best set up.

Problems So far:

  • Exceeded my Supabase free tier monthly usage within a week. So part of the feature I wanted is the live feed of the match up. The data is just really players and their state. Pretty light. The problem is, since at this point I let the gemini run through it freely. Only to realize, the app not only transit the text data but also the avatar data, even though there is no changes in the avatar data since you just set it on profile so there is no need to transmit every N amount of seconds. Since this avatar is being transmitted (just an image actually) but still heavy, it burned 5gb of data transfer easily.

  • The layout. I opt to have some shadows and contrasty unapologetic UI. its kinda okay at a glance but only to realize it is a bit confusing which is a button and which is just a text.

  • The offline and online sync. Having an fully online or fully offline is manageable. but having both it caused me some problems. The main problem was who is the source of truth. Normally, it should be just the offline but here is a case scenario where it doesn't. Logged in to multiple device. In one device, there is 16 matches. The other/online only 12 so far. So it is addecd 4 matches. so far so good. But if I delete some matches. so for example resulting to 15 matches. and other 16. it will still use 16 since it assumes the other 1 match is just pending. Yea the deleted function screwed me up big time.
