Thoughts on the A1 Mini 3D Printer

Probably not much of a recommendation since this is my first 3D printer and I don't really know any better, but I wanted to write this up to organize my thoughts.

I was originally thinking of buying a closed CoreXY printer. Generally, I don't like buying entry-level equipment because I tend to outgrow it quickly—that's just me knowing my own habits from buying cameras, laptops, and phones. However, a closed CoreXY printer was a bit above my budget, and I ended up getting tempted by the A1 Mini because of a perfectly timed sale.

I’m still planning to buy a closed CoreXY printer eventually, but I have to say: I don't think I'll outgrow the A1 Mini anytime soon. It is more than enough for what I want to explore.

Where the A1 Mini Hits Its Ceiling

The printer is definitely limited by its size and its open "bed slinger" format.

  • Bed Size: I tried to print an A4-sized paper holder, and it obviously couldn't fit. The A4 width (210mm) is much bigger than the A1 Mini's 180x180mm bed.
  • Engineering Materials: Because its heated bed maxes out at 80°C and it has an open-frame design (no enclosure to trap ambient heat), you cannot reliably print engineering-grade plastics.
  • ABS and ASA: These warp heavily if exposed to a draft or cool room air. They require a bed temperature of 90°C–110°C and an enclosed chamber to stay flat. They also produce toxic fumes that shouldn't be breathed in an open room.
  • Nylon (PA) and Polycarbonate (PC): These materials require extreme ambient heat to prevent layers from separating and splitting apart mid-print.

Despite this, is a printer released in 2023 already outdated? Spec-wise, maybe a little, but for what it can do, it’s highly capable. It prints PLA, PETG, and even TPU beautifully, which makes up about 99% of what a hobbyist will ever need.

Speed and Acceleration Reality

Before this, I didn't realize how fast modern 3D printers actually are. The A1 Mini prints incredibly fast on the X and Y axes, though as a bed slinger, it moves a bit slower on the Z-axis (up and down).

While it has roughly half the acceleration of higher-end models, it isn't actually throttled in practice. The gap in real-world printing time is remarkably small for two big reasons:

  • Volumetric Flow Limits: Your printing speed isn't actually limited by how fast the toolhead can move; it’s limited by how fast the hotend can melt plastic.
  • Travel Distance: Because the bed is small, the toolhead rarely travels far enough to reach its maximum acceleration anyway, especially if you group your models closely together.

The Multi-Color Dilemma & Quirks

I didn't buy the AMS Lite, but you can still print multi-color with some manual wrangling, which is fine by me.

My biggest caveat is how manual filament swaps work without the AMS. The A1 Mini has a 4-in-1 PTFE tube adapter on the toolhead, which gives you 4 slots. However, there is only one extruder gear biting the filament. Without an automated system, you have to manually pull and push the filament in and out every time you want a color change. I wish there was a version where the toolhead actively managed the 4 filaments by itself.

Of course, the real solution is buying the AMS Lite. But for that price, I'll probably just buy a whole second A1 Mini (wink wink).

Smooth Timelapse Issues: I'm not sure how this compares to other units, but the "Smooth Timelapse" feature kind of sucks. To get that clean video, the toolhead has to return to its home base (or prime tower) for every single layer. This adds a massive amount of print time and introduces stringing to the prints—and I'm only printing PLA right now, not even PETG!

Software, Prep, and Cloud Quirks

There are a few software and workflow quirks I've noticed along the way:

  • Print Prep Takes Time: The pre-print routine takes a while. The motor vibration calibration, the auto bed leveling, and the nozzle cleaning add several minutes, especially if it's the first print of the day.
  • Desktop over App: I never actually print using the Bambu Handy mobile app. I exclusively use Bambu Studio on my desktop because I usually design my own models or modify existing ones.
  • What the App is Good For: I only use Bambu Handy for checking on my printer, pausing prints, skipping failed objects, or checking the nozzle camera.
  • Cloud Redundancy: Out of the box, the printer feels entirely Wi-Fi dependent. When you hit print, it uploads the file to the cloud and then downloads it back to the printer. It feels far too redundant. (Note: You can bypass this by enabling "LAN Only Mode" in the network settings, which sends files directly over your local Wi-Fi). And if its not obvious enough, if the Bambu Server is down, you couldn't also print unless you are already in LAN mode. Did it happen? Not often, but it happened.
  • LED Indicators: I really wish the machine used a simple traffic light system—red, green, blue—to indicate if a print failed or succeeded. Sometimes it's obvious, but if a print fails near completion, you might take it off the plate thinking it's fully done. I don't truly know if a print succeeded until I look very closely or compare it to the slicer.

Final Thoughts

One thing I haven't done yet—and probably won't do for a while—is leave the printer running all night. Most of my prints are supervised, and I only leave it unattended for a max of 3 hours. I'm just not confident enough yet.

If you're leaning into this single-color, print-in-parts workflow, a machine like the Bambu Lab A1 Mini is more than enough. If you’re trying to run a massive print farm making huge batches, its smaller build volume might feel a bit lacking. But for personal use? It punches way above its weight class.

The only real downside to printers like the A1 Mini is that they are "bed slingers"—meaning the build plate physically moves back and forth. Because of that constant momentum, printing really tall, thin objects can be problematic and lead to wobble. That said, I rarely print massive, tall objects in one piece anyway. If a model is that big, it should probably be broken down into interlocking parts from the start.

Even with its quirks and size limits, the A1 Mini is an incredibly solid entry point that performs exactly where it needs to.
