FDM 3D Print Home Post-Processing

Before diving into post-processing, it is worth noting that the best way to reduce finishing time is to start with a clean print. For the most part, use your slicer's designated filament settings, and only dial them in if necessary — 90% of the time, the default dedicated profiles work perfectly and will save you hours of sanding.

But when you are printing props, miniatures, or display pieces that need to look flawless, here is the basic, home-friendly toolkit for finishing your FDM models.

Phase 1: Prep & Assembly

Edge Cleanup: The Deburring Tool

Before you start sanding or filling, you need to clean up the raw plastic. A manual deburring tool is an absolute must-have (and usually costs under $10). It features a swiveling curved blade that easily strips away "elephant's foot" (the squished bottom layer of a print), cleans up sharp edges, and removes tough brim remnants in one smooth motion without gouging the model.

Gap Filling: Epoxy Putty

When merging multi-part prints or dealing with deep layer lines and artifacts, epoxy putty (like Milliput or Apoxie Sculpt) is your best friend.

  • Why it works: You mix two clay-like parts together, push it into the gaps, and smooth it with a little water.
  • The result: It cures at room temperature into a rock-hard surface that behaves perfectly under sandpaper and paint.

The Superglue & Baking Soda Trick

If you are gluing FDM parts together and have a visible seam, standard superglue (CA glue) can be used as an instant gap filler. Apply superglue to the seam, then sprinkle regular baking soda over it. The baking soda acts as an accelerator, instantly curing the glue into a hard, plastic-like cement that you can sand smooth.

Phase 2: Surface Smoothing

Getting rid of layer lines is the most time-consuming part of FDM printing. You generally have two accessible ways to tackle it at home:

1. Priming & Sanding (The Traditional Route)

Getting a smooth surface comes down to alternating between primer and sandpaper.

Is all primer sandable? No. Standard bonding primers can remain slightly rubbery and will instantly gum up your sandpaper. You specifically need Filler Primer (found in any hardware store's automotive spray paint section). This goes on thick to fill micro-gaps and cures into a chalky, hard surface that sands away easily.

Can I use an electric sander? Yes, but with extreme caution. Mouse sanders or rotary tools (like a Dremel) save time on large flat surfaces, but friction generates heat. PLA will quickly melt, warp, and ruin your print under a high-speed sander. Keep the RPMs low, apply very light pressure, and keep the tool moving continuously. Otherwise, stick to standard wet-sanding by hand.

2. Epoxy Coating (The "No Sand" Route)

If you are printing large props or cosplay armor and want to avoid hours of sanding, you can bury the layer lines instead. Products like XTC-3D (or even standard tabletop epoxy resin) can be brushed directly over a raw FDM print. The liquid resin seeps into the layer lines, self-levels, and cures into a hard, glossy shell. You only need to do a very light sanding to rough up the surface before painting.

Phase 3: Final Protection

Clear Topcoats

Once your sanding, priming, and painting are complete, always seal the model. Use a UV protective finish spray (matte, satin, or gloss depending on your desired look). Even if you painted the model flawlessly, a strong clear coat protects painted FDM prints from chipping, scratching, and the oils from people handling them.
