How to Import Only Materials in Maya (Without Geometry)

When working in Autodesk Maya, importing a .mb, .ma, or .fbx file typically brings in the entire DAG hierarchy, including geometry. Because there is no native "Import Materials Only" checkbox, transferring shading networks without cluttering your scene with unwanted meshes requires a specific approach.
Here are three effective workflows to import only materials into your Maya scene.
1. The "Export Selected" Workflow (Cleanest)
If you have access to the original source scene, exporting only the materials is the most organized approach.
- Open the source scene containing your materials.
- Open the Hypershade (
Windows > Rendering Editors > Hypershade). - Select the specific materials and shading networks you want to transfer.
- From the main Maya menu (not the Hypershade menu), navigate to File > Export Selected....
- Save the file as a
.mbor.ma(e.g.,MaterialsLib.mb). - Import this clean file into your target project scene.
2. The "Import & Delete" Workflow (Manual)
If you only have access to the final file and just need to extract materials from it, you can manually isolate them.
- Open a fresh, empty Maya scene.
- Import the file containing the materials.
- In the Viewport or Outliner, select all geometry and delete it.
- Note: Deleting geometry does not delete the materials. The shading networks remain in the Hypershade, simply unassigned.
- Save this cleared scene as a temporary file (e.g.,
Temp_Materials.mb). - Open your main working scene and Import the temporary file.
3. The Python Script Workflow (Automated)
To speed up the manual process, you can use a Python script to automate the import and cleanup sequence. This script prompts you to select a file, imports it into a namespace to avoid conflicts, and immediately deletes any mesh transforms that came with it.
Run the following code in your Script Editor (Python tab):
import maya.cmds as cmds
def import_materials_only():
# 1. Open a file dialog to select the file
file_path = cmds.fileDialog2(fileMode=1, caption="Select File to Import Materials From")
if not file_path:
return
path = file_path[0]
# 2. Import the file and return the list of new nodes (rnn=True)
imported_nodes = cmds.file(path, i=True, rnn=True, namespace="imported_mats")
# 3. Find all mesh nodes among the imported objects
imported_meshes = cmds.ls(imported_nodes, type='mesh', long=True)
if not imported_meshes:
print("File imported. No geometry found to delete.")
return
# 4. Get the parent transforms of those meshes to delete the objects cleanly
transforms_to_delete = cmds.listRelatives(imported_meshes, parent=True, fullPath=True)
# 5. Delete the geometry transforms
if transforms_to_delete:
cmds.delete(list(set(transforms_to_delete)))
print(f"Imported materials from {path} and deleted associated geometry.")
import_materials_only()
How the Script Works:
- Imports the selected file into your current scene.
- Isolates the new nodes brought in by that specific import action.
- Deletes the geometry (mesh transforms) from that isolated list.
- Retains the shading networks (Materials, Textures, Shading Groups) safely in your Hypershade for assignment.
