How to Fix FBX Pivot Points Snapping to Center in Unity

13 Aug 26 (2mo ago)

Importing an FBX into Unity only to find the pivot point defaulted to the geometric center—despite explicitly positioning it at the bottom in Maya or Cinema 4D—is a common source of friction in 3D pipelines.

Before rebuilding your asset, the fix is usually a quick editor toggle or a minor adjustment to how the FBX stores transforms.

The "False Alarm" Check (Do This First)

Often, Unity hasn't actually ignored your pivot; it is simply hiding it. Unity’s Scene View has a toggle that changes where the gizmo appears.

  1. Look at the top-left Unity Scene toolbar.
  2. Toggle the handle position from Center to Pivot.

If set to Center, Unity forces the handle to display at the bounding-box center regardless of the mesh’s actual pivot. Switching to Pivot reveals the true transform origin.

Why True Pivot Offsets Disappear

If the toggle above doesn't fix it, you are experiencing a core difference in how game engines and Digital Content Creation (DCC) tools evaluate data:

  • Maya & Cinema 4D allow you to "edit the pivot" by creating a visual offset without moving the object's actual transform origin.
  • Unity evaluates local vertex coordinates relative to the scene's world origin (0,0,0) or the root transform hierarchy upon import.

Unity does not reliably honor DCC "edit pivot only" operations. If a mesh sits at the world center in your DCC, Unity will discard the visual pivot offset and generate a bounding-box center pivot.

3 Ways to Permanently Fix the Pivot

1. The World Origin Method (Recommended)

This is the cleanest, most production-friendly pipeline solution. Unity always interprets the World Origin (0,0,0) of your DCC scene as the root pivot point of the imported FBX asset.

  1. Position the Mesh: In Maya or Cinema 4D, move your object so that the desired pivot point (e.g., the bottom base) sits precisely at (0,0,0) on the world grid.
  2. Freeze Transformations:
  • Maya: Select the object and go to Modify > Freeze Transformations.
  • Cinema 4D: Go to the Coord. tab in the Attribute Manager and click Freeze All.
  1. Export: Export the object to FBX. Unity will now recognize (0,0,0) as the pivot handle, intentionally offsetting the geometry.

2. Preserve Hierarchy in Unity

By default, Unity's FBX importer optimizes single-mesh files by stripping unnecessary transform nodes. If your DCC exported the pivot as a parent/child transform relationship, Unity might be collapsing it.

  1. Select the imported FBX file in Unity’s Project window.
  2. Navigate to the Model tab in the Inspector.
  3. Enable the Preserve Hierarchy checkbox.
  4. Click Apply.

3. The Empty Parent Workaround (No Re-export Needed)

If you need an immediate fix inside Unity for level placement or logic and cannot alter the source file:

  1. Right-click in the Hierarchy and click Create Empty.
  2. Make your imported FBX mesh a child of this Empty GameObject.
  3. Move the child mesh along the Y-axis until the Empty GameObject sits exactly at the desired base pivot.
  4. Use the Empty GameObject as your target handle for movement, rotation, and scripting.
