Color Grading
General
-
Selective and balance grade. You don't want your film to be like an Instagram filter
-
Contrast slider behaves different between primaries and HDR tools.
-
HDR doesn't affect saturation as much as primaries.
-
Color space aware tools: HDR, Curves,
-
Saturating the dark parts and desaturating the high parts.
-
You can use HDR tools even though your file is not HDR
-
Color Boost is like a vibrance operation. It only increases the lesser color saturation.
-
so pwede diay i separate ang LUT into color and constrast/luma. nice!
-
Color (Overlay) Black and White. Instant Bleach Bypass.
-
input color space: davinci wide gamut
- input gamma: davinci intermediate
-
use davinci wide gamut much more range.
-
refine saturation for the curves. so the curves doesn't affect the saturation
-
use the offset wheel in getting correct color balance first.
-
use the vector scope too instead of that level graph.
-
The LUTs in DaVinci Resolve are stored in a specific folder on your computer. On Windows, you'll find them at C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\LUT

-
i think the best explanation for contrast:
-
offset is exposure
-
grab still shot matching and where it shows the waveform at that same time.
-
But i feel like there's a better option for non log/8bit footage, or 10bit iphone footage. If you use layer nodes through luminance, you can get the colors without affecting the gamma. This way it doesn't stretch the footage with lower bitrate and creates a better image. Pls don't use log on 8bit footage
-
best way to have a monochrome is not just reducing the saturation all the way to 0
- but using the RGB Mixer > Monochrome. This way you can have a different black and white per channel.
-
bleach bypass.
- chemicals that passed through a film
- developer > bleach > fix
- cheap bleach by pass. Increase Constrast. Reduce Saturation.
Shortcuts
- Shift+H. Toggle Highlight
Print Film Emulation LUTS
- Of all the search hits for LUTS, PFE is probably has the most results.
- Like all other LUTS, PFEs is finicky about the input footage. You will probably perform Color Space Transforms (CST).
- The default Kodak 2383 PFE in resolve expects a Cineon Film Log. You can verify it by opening the actual LUT in a text file. The header comment sections requires a Cineon Film Log.
- That said, with my EM5 Mark II JPEG files, I actually have better result for ARRI Log C.
- halation. Dye Layer Reflections > Fine Tune Relative Spread. The missing link. 1.8 2/3 Red. Lower Green. 1/3
Midtones

Saturation
- increase contrast decrease color boost haha. what is happening
- change color space. to HSV. then disable Chanell 1 and 2
- increasing constrast also increases saturation.
- over saturation then desaturate the sky.
- in real life, hue is applied more to the highlights than to shadows and midtones
- vector scope helps on the skin tone line
- half tone should be closer the average light value than the average black value
- brightness perceptive based from the viewer
- luminosity inherent
- saturation on multiplicative function
- colorboost is additive function\
- low key vs high grading
- when the image goes dark, our eyes turn to the black and white rather than color values. so desaturate.
- hard to only create contrast. need to also increase saturation.
- The perils of the color wheel. The moment you deduct blue, you automatically add yellow. check vector scope.
- Its hard to evaluate contrast without saturation
- Contrast is just the difference between two things, I think a better way to think about this is that lowering RGB values increases saturation and raising RGB values decreases saturation. The saturation increase you’re seeing is from the lowering of RGB values. The same effect can be witnessed when adjusting exposure in camera, under exposed images have richer color and over exposed images are washed out.
- saturation trick of changing color space to HSV and disabbling other channels.
- saturation affects color adjustments
Misc
- changing color of the dress throughout time to significy a plot narrative

Face
- reduce clarity to add blur haha nice. for face finishing.
